the mission
The Jersey Strong Coastal Coalition is an alliance encompassing a diverse group of municipalities and citizens determined to protect the beauty of New Jersey’s public beaches and the heritage of its coastal communities into the future.
As ratepayers, we cannot afford the cost of fast-tracked wind projects jacking up energy bills as much as 55% across the state. As residents, we will be paying more for energy and at the same time we will be subsidizing in the billions these business ventures with our tax dollars. That´s a double whammy no one can afford.
Our coalition champions smart energy solutions that harmonize with nature, ensuring that they don’t destabilize our invaluable ecosystems or negatively impact the broad spectrum of local industries, from the fisherman to the vibrant sectors of hospitality and tourism, that power the local and statewide economies.
Projects being rushed into existence are already expected to decimate our tourism industry, cripple the local and state economy, and do lasting damage to the state ecosystem.
This is the closest large-scale wind turbine project along any shoreline in the country and its looming presence is ushering in a new era of industrialization on our coast. With stark visuals stretching across vast distances and disruptive sounds echoing to our shores, these installations will also alter the natural migration patterns of our cherished bird and marine life.
New Jersey’s southern shoreline is a haven, teeming with marine life and ranking among the best places to live in America. This destination shoreline––a ‘backyard’ to visitors from New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and tourists from around the world––is under imminent threat.
The fast-tracking of this project must be stopped, but we cannot do it alone. Please join the alliance and join the fight, before we do irreparable harm to our coastline with reverberations for generations to come.
Jersey Strong Coastal Coalition is a New Jersey nonprofit IRC 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt organization.
(1) The largest wind turbine project in U.S. history is set to erect 300 wind turbines in Atlantic and Ocean counties alone, with 2,000 more turbines planned across the Jersey Coast. Each turbine is more than 1,000 feet tall and 900 feet wide––nearly as tall as the iconic Empire State Building and as wide as an entire New York City block––being installed merely 8.4 miles from our beloved coast. Compare that to the turbines off of the Montauk coast, 35 miles from shore.
(2) An independent analysis concludes that the cost will exceed $100 billion and raise electric customer rates by 55% for residential customers, 70% for commercial customers, and 85% for industrial customers.
